How We Research and Recommend

How we choose what to recommend

Plumelore exists to help you spend less time guessing and more time watching birds. Every product we recommend earns its spot through careful research, not freebies or sponsorships.

Our research process

For each guide we compare the options that matter to backyard birders and weigh them on the factors that actually affect your experience:

  • Manufacturer specifications: capacity, materials, dimensions and design details, checked against the maker’s own documentation.
  • Owner reviews: we read buyer reviews across retail platforms and enthusiast communities to surface the patterns, what holds up, what frustrates people, and what fails early.
  • Birding and wildlife sources: guidance from established birding organizations and field experts on what is safe and effective for the birds themselves.
  • Value over time: cost set against durability, ease of cleaning, and how owners say a product performs season after season.

We do not run hands-on tests

Plumelore does not buy products for hands-on or lab testing. Every comparison comes from the sources above, and each page says where its figures come from.

Independence

We do not accept free products in exchange for coverage, and we do not run sponsored posts. Our rankings come from the research above, not from who pays the most.

How we make money

Plumelore is reader-supported. Some links on this site are affiliate links, which means we may earn a small commission if you buy through them, at no extra cost to you. This never changes which products we recommend. See our affiliate disclosure for the details.

Keeping guides current

Products get discontinued and better options appear. We revisit our guides regularly and update picks, prices and details so the advice stays accurate. If you spot an error or want to know how we researched a specific product, get in touch and we will check it.
